Suffolk Maintenance Maps

Following an on-street survey, BOM produced detailed Maintenance Maps for remedial work on Suffolk’s restriction signs and lines

An on-site survey conducted by Buchanan Order Management in 2017 highlighted areas across the county where Traffic Order restriction signs and lines were faded, missing, or irregular. The original survey was undertaken to provide Suffolk with a complete TRO review and implementation of map-based TROs, before Suffolk County Council then asked BOM to create Maintenance Maps. This has helped the Council allocate resources more efficiently in order to fix any issues found during the TRO review survey.

These Maintenance Maps were produced in two forms. One type relates to the on-street lines – illustrating where some lines are faded and need remarking or where others are faded and now need full removal. In either case, the map contains information about what type of restriction requires maintenance as well as the action to be taken, to clearly indicate the necessary action required to make the markings compliant.

A Maintenance Map detailing the remedial work required on the line restrictions in Suffolk. This includes repainting or removing specific line types as well as smaller scale remedial work such as replacing Missing line end markers or Vegetation Clearance.

Another set of Maintenance Maps pinpoints the location of traffic signs that need to be installed or removed within Suffolk. An image of the correct sign will be included in those locations where a new sign is required, making the process of replacing the sign easier for both Suffolk County Council and the contractor carrying out the maintenance work. The new sign design images were produced using Buchanan Computing’s SignPlot software, which builds the desired sign according to the exact specifications from the TSRGD.

At the request of Suffolk County Council, BOM tailored its Maintenance Maps to incorporate Conservation Areas. To reduce the visual impact of on-street restrictions in these sensitive areas, they require specific sign and line designs, which BOM incorporated into the maintenance plans for the relevant areas. This again enabled clear communication between Suffolk County Council and their contractors.

A Maintenance Map for the sign within Suffolk. Those signs requiring replacing are shown with the exact sign design they need to be replaced with. The Sign Maintenance Required legend specifies the direct action to be taken on each sign – for some common actions such as Renewing a No Waiting Roundel Symbol, this is specifically included in the legend. The plan contains some roads within a Conservation Area (green background) which require specific maintenance considerations.)

BOM has also supplied the Council with a database with the exact numbers for each remedial action to be undertaken. The data will include the correct dimensions and designs of any new signs which are required. This can then be passed directly from Suffolk County Council to their maintenance teams, enabling cost effective and accurate remedial work to ensure signing is enforceable.
